Friday’s Rambling: The week that was for the Miami Dolphins

Beginning a new series this week, this will be the first weekly release of what I have called Friday’s Rambling. Yeah, I know, but I couldn’t really think of anything better. Basically, it will be a bit of me rambling on about the week that was for the Miami Dolphins and what the events of that week will lead to in the coming weeks for the team. So, without further ado, let’s get this show on the road.

First off, the biggest news coming out of Miami last week was the fact that the Dolphins and Jaguars had agreed to a trade — or a couple of trades to be specific — that involved both Miami left tackle Branden Albert and Jacksonville tight end Julius Thomas. The short version of the trade is that Miami sends Albert and a 2017 seventh round pick to Jacksonville in exchange for Thomas and a 2018 seventh round pick.

Off the bat, I don’t really get all the fuss about Miami giving up a 2017 pick. Yes, they are currently down to just four draft picks for this year, but they will almost certainly be receiving two compensatory picks to bring that total back up to six. With the team mainly needing top end talent, the lack of a late round, depth pick will not hurt this team to the degree that some fans imagine.

On the point of the players involved in the trade, I like the move by Miami as long as they can get Julius Thomas down to a team friendly contract. If that is accomplished, then Thomas could be a great addition to this roster. The other part of the trade I really like is that the team got something for Branden Albert. Rather than just cutting him and getting nothing but dead cap, the team managed to get someone in return that may help this offense going forward.

The other bit of major news from this week is the fact that Ryan Tannehill will likely not need knee surgery before the team opens training camp this Summer. While there has been some major question marks about Tannehill this offseason, it seems that we may finally have gotten a solid answer that’s not based on guesses and such.

With Tannehill likely to continue his improvement from last season, I see no reason why the Miami Dolphins can’t make the playoffs in 2017. Heck, if the team can add the right pieces, we may even be able to compete with New England at the top of the AFC East. I doubt we will be able to pass them, but keeping it close would be a win in itself.

The last bit of news of course is the signing of some new players this past week. While their one day contract have already expired, it was a nice move by the team to add some of it’s former greats so that they could retire from the NFL as members of the Miami Dolphins. Class acts guys.
