Fresno State Overcomes Slow Start to Beat New Mexico: A Fan's Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

Fresno State came into Saturday's game at New Mexico with just a 1-3 record in road games this season. Their troubles away from home continued early in the game as the Lobos jumped out to an early 21-0 lead. The Bulldogs looked horrible from the start kicking the ball out of bounds, committing penalties, giving up big run plays, and throwing a pick six.

The Bulldogs didn't give up and took advantage of injuries to the Lobos' starting and back up quarterbacks to make a comeback. The offense started clicking in the second quarter and Fresno State was able to cut the deficit to 24-14 at half thanks to two touchdown passes from Derek Carr.

Derek Carr came out throwing to begin the third quarter and cashed in with two more touchdown passes. Carr's fourth and final touchdown pass of the day came on an 89-yard-pass to freshman Davante Adams. On the day Carr had 416 yards and 4 touchdowns. Adams was his favorite target hauling in 9 catches for 198 yards and 2 touchdowns.

After trailing 24-7, Fresno State scored 42 unanswered points to put the Lobos away for good. New Mexico was unable to get any offense going with third string quarterback Quinton McCown and have to be disappointed after getting off to such a great start. The Lobos did manage to steal a touchdown late to bring the score to 49-32.

The Bulldogs were expected to win this game, but after a such a rough start, I think you can consider this a big win for Fresno State. The coaching staff and players deserve a lot of credit for not giving in and coming back on the road. The Bulldogs were clearly the better team and the way they dominated the second half gives them even more confidence going forward.

The win brings the Bulldogs' season record to 6-3 with three games remaining. Fresno State needs to win one of the next three to ensure themselves a winning season and a trip to a bowl game. The Bulldogs should be feeling pretty good about their season so far and with two home games remaining, 2012 could end up being a great year for Fresno State.
