Frankie Edgar Gets Back in the Winner's Circle with Win Over Charles Oliveira at UFC 162

COMMENTARY | UFC 162 has come and gone taking with it Frankie Edgar's three fight losing streak. The former UFC lightweight champion defeated a very game Charles Oliveira in the co-main event of UFC 162: Silva vs Weidman.

Edgar's fight with Oliveira was his first three round fight since 2009. Edgar's previous seven fights were five round title fights as either the challenger or the champion. Edgar recently went on a skid, losing to Ben Henderson twice and Jose Aldo once. Edgar proved that you cannot keep a good man down and won a unanimous decision over Oliveira.

Oliveira did a solid job of using his length to keep Edgar at a distance. However, it was Edgar's ability to land multiple shots at a time as well as his takedowns that kept Oliveira off balance all night.

Edgar landed a solid shot in the first that sent Oliveira to the ground. It was Edgar's ability to move smoothly in and out with combinations that allowed him to control the first round.

In the second round Oliveira was able to find his range with leg kicks but Edgar was still able to get inside and land his combinations. Edgar went for a slam to close out the round but was caught in a guillotine on the way down. Edgar lasted until the round came to an end avoiding the potential submission.

In the third, Edgar continued to move forward. Edgar tagged Oliveira early and put him on shaky legs but Oliveira recovered. As the third round went on, Edgar increased his aggressiveness but to the credit of Oliveira, he stayed in the fight as much as he could.

At the conclusion of the fight, the judges official scores were 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28. All in favor of Edgar.

This win marks Edgar's first win in the featherweight division. While Edgar is open to moving back up to lightweight, it appears that the future for Edgar will be at 145 pounds. Edgar went into last night as the number three ranked featherweight in the UFC. One more win and he will likely be right back in the mix for a title shot.

A possible opponent for Edgar's next fight would be Chad Mendes. Mendes is currently the number one ranked featherweight under champion Jose Aldo. Another possibility would be Cub Swanson who also won at UFC 162. There are plenty of exciting fights at featherweight for Frankie Edgar.

There is no denying Edgar's ability. He is one of the world's best. There is also little doubt that he once again will wear the gold belt sooner or later.

UFC 162: Silva vs Weidman took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 6th and aired live on pay per view.
