Martin MacMahon: Pressure on as Whitecaps miss out on Yallop

The San Jose Earthquakes came back from a goal down to draw 2-2 with Chivas USA on Saturday, but coach Frank Yallop wanted more. Much more.

The 'Quakes have earned a reputation for late goals and have adopted the motto, "Goonies never say die." Last season, San Jose won or drew eight games thanks to stoppage-time goals.

Substitute Cordell Cato scored in the 76th minute, but the winner Yallop thought his side deserved never emerged.

"Not just three goals, I thought we could have got five or six, to be honest," Yallop said. "That was the story of night - us not finishing our chances and them capitalizing on the couple that they had."

Chivas USA blocked seven San Jose shots, the same number as the Goats took total.

Chasing the game, Yallop inserted Cato as well as Adam Jahn. Both had chances, with the Goats clearing chances off the line in the late going. Jahn replaced Steven Lenhart, who had entered into some physical tussles with Chivas USA defenders.

"I just think he was getting obviously banged up and hit off the ball, grabbed, all that stuff," Yallop said. "I was just trying to protect him, make sure he's available for next week, not getting drawn into a red card situation with their defenders."

The scrappy game featured 29 fouls.

"It isn't the Fifth Symphony," Chelis said.
