Frank Klopas named new head coach of Montreal Impact

The Montreal Impact announced Wednesday that Frank Klopas will be the club’s new head coach and director of player personnel for the next three seasons. As first reported by Goal last week, Swiss coach Marco Schällibaum will not be returning next year, though the Impact will still be paying his wages.

After nearly three seasons with the Chicago Fire, where he reached the playoffs on one occasion, Klopas was fired in October and inquired about the Impact job a few weeks later. The Greek native, who spent nine seasons playing professional soccer in Greece and had 39 caps with the U.S. national team, enjoys a strong relationship with Impact sporting director Nick De Santis.

Mauro Biello (assistant coach), Youssef Dahha (goalkeeper coach) and Paolo Pacione (fitness coach) will all retain their positions on the Impact’s technical staff, whereas former assistant coach Philippe Eullaffroy will now only oversee Montreal’s youth academies. In addition, former director of soccer Matt Jordan has been promoted to technical director.

Klopas is also expected to bring along an additional assistant coach of his choosing.

The Impact kick off their preseason training camp on Jan. 27 in Montreal.
