Franchitti fastest but Viso gets Detroit pole

The SportsXchange

Dario Franchitti posted the fastest qualifying times for the first of this weekend's two IndyCar races in Detroit to earn the pole position, but because of a 10-grid penalty for making an approved motor change at the Indy 500, he will start in the 11th spot.

In earning the 31st pole of his career for Saturday's race, Franchitti posted a lap time of 1:19.3311 on Belle Isle's 2.36-mile street course. He will receive the championship point and cash prize for winning the pole.

The pole position will go to Andretti driver EJ Viso, whose best lap was 0.2 seconds slower than Franchitti. Mike Conway, James Jakes and defending IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay followed Viso with the fastest qualifying times for Saturday's race.

A separate qualifying session for the Sunday race will take place on Saturday morning.
