Four Players to Watch at the Greenbrier Classic: A Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

The PGA Tour moves on from the Washington D.C. area to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia for the Greenbrier Classic. Like Congressional Country Club, The Old White TPC course suffered some storm damage on the evening of June 29th; however the tournament is still on schedule to begin on July 5th. While this is a full field event, there are four players in particular that I am looking forward to watching at the Greenbrier Classic.

Tiger Woods

Like most everyone else I am interested to see how Tiger Woods will follow up his recent victory at the AT&T National. Will he come out and play well? Or will Tiger have another disappointing finish following a victory? Since this is Woods' first time to compete in the Greenbrier Classic I am not sure how he will play. However, I suspect that Woods will get into contention for his fourth title of 2012 and I would not be surprised if he claimed his first Greenbrier Classic title.

Tom Watson

Golf Hall of Fame member Tom Watson will be making a rare appearance at a regular PGA Tour event. Watson was my favorite player when I was younger and I still enjoy watching him play today. I am hoping that Watson can come out and play with the young guys of the regular tour and make the cut.

John Daly

Things always get interesting when John Daly walks onto a golf course. You never know whether you will see great golf or if you will see a train wreck. In either case it is must-see television. This will be only Daly's sixth start on the PGA Tour in 2012. However, Daly did tee it up at the Irish Open that ended on July 1. Daly finished in a tie for 24th position.

Phil Mickelson

Like Daly, one never knows what is going to happen with Phil Mickelson these days. Mickelson is capable of playing brilliant golf and yet he is also quite capable of shooting 76-79 and boarding the private plane early for the UK. I hope that Mickelson can put himself into contention and postpone that plane trip until at least Sunday evening, July 8th.

Dwight is an avid golfer. While still relatively new to the game, he plays as often as the weather and his schedule will allow.
