Former Portland Trail Blazer Brandon Roy: 'My Basketball Days Are Numbered. That's No Secret.'

Yahoo Contributor Network

COMMENTARY | While no official announcement has been made, former Portland Trail Blazer guard -- and 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year -- Brandon Roy has stated that his NBA career is likely over.

The three time All-Star, speaking with ESPN's Kevin Pelton after Sunday's University of Washington Alumni game, indicated that he is done playing professionally and is looking forward to the next chapter of his life.

After sitting out the entire 2011-12 season, Roy appeared in just five games this past NBA season and was released by the Minnesota Timberwolves on May 10th of this year.

While the health of Roy's knees was brought into question from the moment he was drafted, he still managed to play an average of 64 games per year over his five seasons in Portland. And, during his three year apex, from the 2007-08 season through the 2009-10 season, Roy held per game averages of 21.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists, and was routinely mentioned as one of the premier shooting guards in the NBA.

Roy's career was likely far too short to be considered for the Basketball Hall of Fame, but his impressive tenure in Portland does warrant consideration for the Blazers to retire his number.

To date, Portland has retired the jersey numbers of 11 players and one coach -- no. 77 in honor of Jack Ramsay, who led Portland to their only NBA Championship in 1977 -- and Roy's brilliant but short stint with the Blazers should earn him the honor of having his no. 7 hanging in the rafters among the other Blazers' greats.
