Arkansas quarterback Rafe Peavey announced via Twitter he was leaving the Razorbacks to join SMU.

Peavey was competing for the backup job behind Austin Allen, who was named starter back in the spring. Peavey had also said in previous interviews that despite not being the starter, he had no intention of leaving the program.

“I’m going to stay regardless,” Peavey told the Arkansas News in April. “Been committed here since sophomore year of high school. I’ve never had any doubt. This is the place God wants me to be. I have faith in that.”

Peavey was the No. 2 quarterback coming out of spring, but an offseason back issue pushed him back into a competition with Ty Storey and Cole Kelley. Peavey had participated in limited practice during fall camp while recovering.

Peavey, who was the No. 4 quarterback of the state of Missouri in 2014, will have to sit out a season per NCAA transfer rules. SMU’s current starting quarterback Matt Davis is a senior.
