PHOENIX (AP) -- Jim Gintonio, a veteran reporter who covered sports in the Phoenix area for more than three decades, has died. He was 65.
The Arizona Republic, where Gintonio last worked, reported that he died Sunday after a battle with lung cancer.
An Ohio native, Gintonio started at the Phoenix Gazette in 1980 and moved to the Republic when the papers merged in 1997. He had been the beat writer for the Phoenix Coyotes and received a jersey with his name on the back from them upon retiring in April 2012.
Affable and easygoing, Gintonio was popular with the teams he covered and the reporters he worked with, often trading good-natured and self-deprecating barbs with anyone he came into contact with.
