On September 20-23 the PGA TOUR Championship will be held at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. This tournament represents the culmination of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and the end of the regular tour year.
The winner of the TOUR Championship receives a hefty check and a nice crystal trophy. If the winner is one of five men from the field of 30 he will also win the FedEx Cup and an even larger check. This is because there are five players that have a chance to win the FedEx Cup by simply winning the TOUR Championship. I'm sure you can name two of them and probably a third. They are Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. These men do not suffer from any lack of press attention. However, there are two other men that can also claim the FedEx Cup by winning the TOUR Championship. Have you come up with their names yet? Okay, the players are Nick Watney and Brandt Snedeker.
Nick Watney finds himself in position to claim the FedEx Cup by virtue of his win at The Barclays. While he did not finish well at the ensuing playoff events, he needs only to win the TOUR Championship to hoist the FedEx Cup. This is because the points he gained in the first playoff event have put him in third place in the FedEx Cup standings. Watney has tasted victory five times on tour. Although his 2012 season has not matched his success from 2011 a sixth career title at the TOUR Championship would be very sweet indeed.
Brandt Snedeker has had a solid 2012 season winning the Farmers Insurance Championship and finishing in third place at the Open Championship. Snedeker then finished second to Watney at The Barclays to begin the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Unlike Watney, Snedeker also had a Top 10 finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship before falling off at the BMW Championship. He enters the TOUR Championship in fifth place in the FedEx Cup standings. If Snedeker can play well at East Lake he has an excellent opportunity to head to the Ryder Cup matches on an incredible high.
Woods and McIlroy will be paired together once again in the first two rounds of the TOUR Championship. This will guarantee that most eyes are on them. However, fans should also keep an eye on Watney and Snedeker as they too try to claim the crystal and the cup.
Dwight is an avid golfer. While still relatively new to the game, he plays as often as the weather and his schedule will allow.
