Flyers 2, Jets 1

The SportsXchange

PHILADELPHIA -- Left winger Scott Hartnell and center Sean Couturier scored goals, Steve Mason made 25 saves and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 in an early start Friday.

The Flyers (11-12-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with their seventh win in the last 10 games. They've inched their way back into playoff contention following a 1-7 start.

Right winger Michael Frolik scored the only goal for the Jets (12-12-4), who saw their two-game winning streak end. An early wake-up call didn't seem to bother the Flyers, who scored just 48 seconds into a game that started 11:30 a.m. EST -- the NHL's only game this season with a morning start time.

Hartnell came off the bench for a line change, saw the puck trickling in front of the net and fired a slap shot past goaltender Ondrej Pavelec to make it 1-0.

The Jets took just two shots on net in the first period and never really got things going until Frolik scored with 7:07 left to cut it to 2-1. He wristed one past Mason during a scramble in front.

But Philadelphia's defense stiffened and Mason preserved the one-goal lead. He made a blind, glove save on a wrister by defenseman Dustin Byfuglien with a screen blocking his vision in the final minute. The Flyers then held on during a wild scramble when the Jets pulled their goalie for an extra skater.

Couturier made it 2-0 on a short-handed goal in the second period. He skated down the left side ahead of a defender, deked Pavelec with a forehand shot and scored on a backhander.

In the first period, Pavelec made a sprawling pad save with his right leg on Couturier's short-handed breakaway shot. Pavelec was sharp, making 32 saves.

Winnipeg fell to 6-2-1 against Eastern Conference teams. The Jets lost left winger Evander Kane, who is tied for second on the team with seven goals, to a lower-body injury in the first period. There was no immediate word on the extent of his injury.

Mason continued his excellent play, and has yet to allow more than three goals in 25 games for the Flyers, dating to last season.
