The SportsXchange

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton agreed to a contract extension through the 2016-17 season, the university announced Wednesday.

The Seminoles had a subpar 18-16 overall record and and finished sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference this past season, but Hamilton has built the program into a consistent winner since arriving in 2002.

""We are excited for our university and our basketball program as we enter a new era in the Atlantic Coast Conference, which is now the best league in the history of college basketball," Hamilton said.

Florida State has reached the NCAA Tournament four times and won at least 20 games six times in Hamilton's 11 seasons. He was named ACC coach of the year after the 2009 and 2012 seasons.

"Coach Hamilton has led this program to unprecedented success including the first ACC championship in school history and eight straight postseason appearances," Florida State president Eric Barron said in a statement. "He is the second-longest tenured coach in the conference and, under his leadership, FSU is in excellent position entering the new ACC, which is the strongest basketball conference in the nation."
