Senior guard Greg Gantt scored 30 points -- his biggest night since scoring a career-high 34 against Stetson back on Dec. 6 -- to lead Florida Atlantic to an 84-78 victory over Western Kentucky in Sun Belt Conference basketball Thursday night.
The Owls (12-15, 7-9) took command of the game with an 8-0 run in the first half that helped them to a 41-34 lead at the intermission.
They led by as many as 15 points at several points of the second half but saw the visiting Hilltoppers (13-13, 7-8) cut that margin down to five points in the final minute.
The Hilltoppers had the chance to get even closer but with FAU up by only six points after Gantt canned one of two free throws with 15.7 seconds remaining, Brandon Harris missed a rushed 3-pointer. The Owls came away with the ball in the scramble for the rebound as time ran out.
In addition to Gantt's scoring, Stefan Moody scored 23 and Pablo Bertone added nine for the Owls.
George Fant led Western Kentucky with 20 points.
The victory gave the Owls, who playing their seventh and final season in the Sun Belt, their first season series sweep of the Hilltoppers.
