Lions CB Florence breaks forearm

Whether the Lions are deep and talented enough in the secondary will be something to watch. They moved to strengthen their hand at cornerback prior to Week One by signing ex-Broncos CB Drayton Florence, who was released as Denver pared its roster to the 53-player limit. “He’ll come in and provide some good quality depth for them,” said an evaluator familiar with Florence, who has made 96 career starts. “He brings knowledge, instincts, toughness.” Florence’s ability to play both outside and inside is an asset, the evaluator said. The Lions weren’t concerned that the 31-year-old Florence didn’t make Denver’s roster. “They had a pretty good situation at corner; but we liked the way he looked in the preseason,” Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said, according to the club. Before adding Florence, the Lions traded for Redskins reserve CB Kevin Barnes, who made the 53-player roster. The additions of Florence and Barnes came with Chris Houston — regarded as the club’s top cornerback — on the mend from a preseason ankle injury.
