Flames commit to rookie Monahan

The Calgary Flames saw enough of rookie center Sean Monahan in his first 10 games to keep him around for the remainder of the season.

Monahan, the sixth pick of the 2013 NHL Draft, will not be going back to Ottawa in the Ontario Hockey League, the Flames announced Wednesday.

The 19-year-old leads the team in goals with six and is second in points with nine while averaging 16 minutes per game.

"We feel good about him. We feel good about the decision we've made," Flames general manager Jay Feaster said.

Once Monahan plays in his 10th game of the season on Thursday against the Dallas Stars, the Flames are committed to using the first year of his entry-level contract.

"We believe his development is best served with us," Feaster said in a statement. "We feel good about him. ... He's a 19-year-old going on 29 years old."

Feaster said he might release Monahan to play for Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in late December and early January.

"We're a big believer ... in the (World Junior Championship) and what they do for players," Feaster said.
