As a New York Giants fan I am so ready to get the 2012 NFL season started. However, there are a few things that concern me heading in to the new season. I'm not ready to hit the panic button but there are some areas that give me cause to pause.
Here are five areas that concern me as a New York Giants fan:
Secondary:The big question here is what's going to happen with Terrell Thomas and his injured right knee? Thomas tore his ACL last year in a preseason game against the Chicago Bears and didn't see the field again.
He injured the same ACL last week but did not suffer any tears. He hopes to rehab his knee rather than have surgery in hopes of playing this year. I want to be optimistic but I don't expect much out of him in 2012.
The Thomas issue is bad enough. But what about the departure of Aaron Ross and Deon Grant? That's kind of a big loss there. And I also wonder about Prince Akumura. Is he going to stay healthy? Is he going to step up his game?
TEs: The acquisition of Martellus Bennett does nothing to excite me. When he was with the Dallas Cowboys he never lived up to the hype surrounding him. Jake Ballard is no longer with the team and if they think that Bear Pascoe is a viable replacement...yikes.
WR depth: Mario Manningham booked it to the San Francisco 49ers and that leaves the burning question of who will be the number three wide receiver? I'm excited about Rueben Randle, but he's a rookie. You could throw in Domenik Hixon or maybe Ramses Barden but neither one of those guys are as talented as Mario Manningham. Just think back to the NFC Championship and the Super Bowl if you disagree.
Running game: Obviously Ahmad Bradshaw is the starter. But who will be the number two guy? The Giants are a running back by committee team and with Brandon Jacobs not in the mix anymore are they going to lean on rookie running back David Wilson? I'm also curious to see what Andre Brown is going to bring to the table.
Another guy I want to check out is second year guy Da'Rel Scott. He hasn't seen the field much and what little time he played last year isn't enough to form a reasonable opinion. We'll just have to wait and see.
Special teams:I know that the Giants will be bringing back kicker Lawrence Tynes and punter Steve Weatherford along with long snapper Zak DeOssie, but who is going to return punts and kickoffs? Devin Thomas and Aaron Ross handled that duty last year but both are no longer with the team.
Hixon may not be a bad choice. He has 80 punt returns and 51 kick returns in the regular season. And by the way, Domenik Hixon is the last Giant to get a return touchdown. In 2009 he took a punt 79 yards for a TD against the Dallas Cowboys. I remember that. That was awesome! Hey, at least I ended this little list on a high note.
Dylan Davis is an avid New York Giants fan and has grown up on New York Giants football. He's seen his G-Men win four Super Bowls and can't wait to see them win four more.
