ESPN analyst and former NBA player Jalen Rose recently shocked the sports world by admitting he intentionally tried to hurt Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant during a playoff game in the 2000 NBA season, but this isn't the first time he has put himself in the spotlight for ill-advised actions.
Here's a look back at the top five most controversial Jalen Rose moments in recent memory:
His comment was extremely controversial because "Uncle Tom" is an insensitive epithet for a black person who behaves in a subservient manner to white people.
Hill was extremely upset about Rose's comments, and he responded by publishing an open letter in The New York Times. In the latter, Hill said Rose's use of the term "Uncle Tom" was "sad and pathetic."
2. DUI arrest, 2011: On March 11, 2011, Rose was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He pleaded guilty two weeks later.
According to a USAToday.com report , Rose was arrested in West Bloomfield after crashing his Cadillac Escalade on Walnut Lake Road, west of Middlebelt, Michigan. No one was injured in the single-vehicle crash.
3. Insensitive comments about New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, 2012: In Feb. of 2012, Rose appeared on Mike and Mike in the Morning radio show and weighed in on Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski's decision to go out partying after losing in Super Bowl XLVI.
"Forgive this term because I didn't make it up: He was having a good time. He was white boy wasted. He was having a good time," Rose said.
Rose later returned to the studio to apologize for the insensitive remarks.
4. Busted for Speeding after DUI sentence, 2011: Rose got caught for speeding in July of 2011 just hours after he'd been sentenced to 20 days in jail for DUI by a judge earlier in the day. He was pulled over shortly before 9 p.m. in the Detroit suburb of Clawson, going 46 m.p.h. in a 25 m.p.h. zone.
5. Rose argues with Skip Bayless, 2011: During a 2012 episode of "First Take," Rose called out Skip Bayless for lying about his high school basketball exploits. "Did you average 1.4 points as a senior in high school?" Rose asked, while Bayless tried to deflect the question and move on.
"All of that Pistol Pete stuff? Water Pistol Pete Junior." Bayless responded by saying that the two will address his high school career later in the program, but Rose kept going. "Don't ignore that. Did you play JV as a junior? Okay."
The moment was controversial because a pleasant, civil discussion quickly escalated into a heated argument, where Rose essentially chided Bayless for being a liar.
