The New York Knicks will need to make some serious roster decisions soon. Free agency is just around the corner. NBA teams may begin signing free agents on July 11, 2012. And there are a few key free agents for the Knicks. One of them is clearly at the top of their list. Here are five reasons why the Knicks must sign point guard Steve Nash.
1. Elite Talent
Nash is an elite point guard in the NBA. Even at 38, Nash was second in the league in assists with 10.7 per game. He also averaged 12.5 points a game. Nash is a veteran point guard who can orchestrate an offense like a maestro. With Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler, Nash would have plenty of toys to play with on the court. His own numbers would improve, and the Knicks' offense would be explosive.
2. Mentor to Jeremy Lin
Lin was great for the Knicks, but a knee injury ended his season early. Lin exploded onto the scene in February 2012 with some amazing performances. But this was his first real stint in the NBA. Nash could ease the pressure on Lin by stepping in as the starter. Nash would also be a great mentor to him.
3. Lack of Point Guards
The Knicks lost point guards Iman Shumpert and Baron Davis to knee injuries during the 2012 NBA Playoffs. Shumpert may be out until December. At 33, Davis may not come back after suffering yet another major injury. The Knicks are short on point guards. Nash would add some much needed depth.
4. Subtraction by Addition
Signing Nash would also mean keeping him from the Miami Heat. The Heat are clearly the team to beat in the NBA. With Nash, the Heat would be unstoppable. The Knicks can't let that happen.
5. Room for Improvement
The Knicks have room for improvement. Their 2011-2012 roster was not good enough to contend with the Heat. The Knicks need an upgrade. Adding Nash would give the Knicks a fighting chance.
These are five reasons why the Knicks must sign Nash. If they do, they will be a formidable opponent in the NBA. If they don't, the Knicks better have a good Plan B.
