Whether a player slides into base at an awkward angle, unsuccessfully tries to catch a fly ball, or just turns too quickly, in a split second those wrong moves can cause an ankle sprain that can remove a player from a game. Depending on the severity of the ankle sprain, a player could also be placed on the DL. The most recent MLB player to sprain their ankle during a game is Chicago White Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis, who left the game in the fourth inning. Eduardo Escobar replaced Youkilis. The following MLB players also sprained their ankle during a game in 2012:

Johan Santana

In July 2012, Johan Santana of the New York Mets sprained his ankle in Friday's game against the Cubs at Citi Field. Santana sprained his ankle when a base runner stepped on his heel. At the time, Santana was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Jed Lowrie

In July 2012, Jed Lowrie of the Houston Astros sprained his ankle in Saturday's game against San Francisco. In the third inning, Lowrie sprained his ankle when Gregor Blanco slid into the bag and seemed to spike Lowrie's ankle as he was turning to look for the ball. Lowrie was helped off the field. Brian Bixler replaced Lowrie.

Luke Hochevar

In July 2012, Luke Hochevar of the Kansas City Royals sprained his ankle in Thursday's game against the Blue Jays in the bottom of the fifth. Hochevar sprained his ankle while running to cover first base. When Hochevar hit the bag he rolled his ankle. He remained out of the game in the sixth inning.

Mat Latos

In July 2012, starter Mat Latos of the Cincinnati Reds sprained his ankle in Monday's game against the Astros. During the fifth inning, Latos sprained his ankle after delivering a pitch. Latos left the game in the fifth inning, and was replaced with Miguel Cairo. Latos said he left the game because of his high pitch count, not the ankle.

Collin Cowgill

In June 2012, Oakland Athletics outfielder Collin Cowgill sprained his ankle in Friday's game against the San Francisco Giants. Cowgill sprained his ankle when he dove for a fly ball to the left field in the top of the ninth. At the time, Cowgill was placed on the 15-day DL.
