Classifying the five biggest upsets in the 2012 NCAA tournament isn't as difficult as in some past years, especially with how some of the top teams have dropped off the page. Most fans participating in NCAA tournament bracket predictions have lost the chance at perfection this year as a result.
Below are the five most surprising upsets of the 2012 NCAA tournament.
Norfolk State Beats Missouri
Missouri had become a sweetheart pick by many college basketball fans to make it all the way to the final four. Unfortunately for fans of the Tigers, they didn't even make it out of the first round. The No. 2 seed dropped an 86-84 game to a Norfolk State Spartans team broke many brackets around the nation.
Lehigh Beats Duke
Duke had a chance to really make some noise in the tournament this year, but a weak second half against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks doomed them. Most of the credit goes to C.J. McCollum and his 30-point game, but it was a team effort on defense to take down the No. 2 seeded Duke Blue Devils.
Ohio Beats Michigan
Going up against Ohio University in the first round, the No. 4 seeded Michigan Wolverines should have had no problem winning. Nothing went according to plan though, and the Ohio Bobcats emerged with a surprise second round win. This No. 13 Ohio team will look to shock the world in the third round now.
South Florida Beats Temple
The No. 12 seeded South Florida Bulls upset the No. 5 seeded Temple Owls in a game that turned into an absolute blow-out. South Florida out-scored the 24-7 Owls 43-25 in the second half alone, putting the finishing touches on a very nice 58-44 win. The win set up a third round game of No. 12 South Florida vs. No. 13 Ohio, guaranteeing that a double-digit seeded team would make it into the sweet sixteen.
North Carolina State Beats Georgetown
Some might argue that N.C. State upsetting No. 6 San Diego State in the second round was a bigger upset, but by taking out No. 3 Georgetown in the third round, the school advanced to an impressive sweet sixteen. The North Carolina State Wolfpack is on a very nice run in the 2012 NCAA tournament, possibly dreaming of an even more competitive game against the North Carolina Tar Heels coming up.
