Fit with Manning will determine Broncos' RB depth

Everything the Broncos do for the remainder of the offseason will be, in some way, tied to their acquisition of QB Peyton Manning, and that includes their philosophy when it comes to running backs. The team opted not to re-sign popular FB Spencer Larsen, mainly because fullbacks don’t have much of a role in the offense Manning runs. But when it comes to whom Manning will be playing alongside in the backfield, the decisions become tougher for the Denver front office.

Willis McGahee is locked in as the starting running back, and it is widely believed the team will add a back during the draft to help carry the load. Depending on how many running backs head coach John Fox is willing to keep on the roster, there could be a tough training-camp fight.

Former first-round pick Knowshon Moreno may have run out of chances after underperforming early in his career. Yet, because of his ability as a receiver out of the backfield — something vital to Manning’s offense — we hear he may be kept on. If so, he’ll have to beat out Lance Ball, who has been a productive player the past two years for Denver, and Mario Fannin, whom, sources say, the team was high on before he suffered a season-ending injury in training camp last year.
