Finley could go out in blaze of glory for Packers

Even though he recently said he’d love to remain a Packer for life, sources close to the scene tell us Jermichael Finley remains likely to be playing elsewhere after this season, with the team having no intention of picking up the second half of the two-year, $14 million contract the talented but often tempestuous tight end received late last February.

But while Finley might be moving on after this season, that won’t preclude him from quite possibly being a key offensive force for the Packers in the postseason. While Finley has to be considered a major disappointment this season — having come nowhere close to performing like a first-tier tight end in the mold of Rob Gronwkowski or Jimmy Graham — he still remains very talented and has shown signs in recent weeks of being a potent weapon all over the field.

Not only does it behoove Finley to put his best foot forward to improve his market value. We hear Finley also genuinely savors the opportunity to be prominently involved in a Super Bowl run after being on the sideline with a season-ending knee injury during Green Bay’s march to the Super Bowl in 2010.

But Finley’s future in Green Bay definitely looks shaky, in no small part because of his penchant for trash talk off the field and steadily ruffling the feathers of one of the NFL’s most straight-laced franchises. Finley also never has appeared to take much of an interest in blocking, further diminishing his value as the offense appears to be moving in a more run-oriented direction.

The bottom line?

Look for a TE-by-committee in Green Bay in 2013, with third-year pro Andrew Quarless, who has made himself into an excellent blocker and has untapped potential as a receiver with good speed, heading the cast.
