Fight Master: Bellator MMA Reality Series Kicked Off Wednesday Night on Spike TV
Bellator MMA launched its new reality series on Wednesday night, following promotion's first Summer Series live event.
Fight Master: Bellator MMA is similar to its Spike TV predecessor, The Ultimate Fighter, but is similar to The Voice in how the fighters are divvied up into teams.
The show starts with 32 welterweight athletes that pair off, trying to fight their way onto the show. The winners of the fights gain the opportunity to select from one of four coaches.
Much like The Voice, the coaches jockey for position, trying to sway fighters into selecting their respective teams.
The coaches for this inaugural season are former UFC champions Randy Couture and Frank Shamrock, elite coach Greg Jackson, and former Bellator champion Joe Warren.
Fight Master doesn’t really break much new ground, at least in the premier episode. The show does a good job introducing the coaches, introducing the fighters, the fighters go at it, and then the winner selects his team.
The season finale will take place on a live Sept. 7 broadcast on Spike TV. The overall winner of the season wins $100,000 and earns a spot in a future Bellator welterweight tournament.
The series should be of interest to fight fans, but it will take some time for Fight Master to develop beyond fights and the coach selection process that the premiere kicked off. Only five of the fighters selected his team by the end of the series opener.
The question mark is how Fight Master plays out beyond the serious fight fan and if it gains any traction over the typically difficult summer television season.
