100,000 expected to protest ahead of Brazil semifinal

FIFA says it has no plans to cancel the Confederations Cup taking place in Brazil, despite anti-government protests spreading across the country.

More than a million people took to the streets on Thursday, voicing their anger over the way their more pressing issues have been cast aside to make way for the World Cup in 2014. Football's governing body released a statement regarding the eight-team competition and the plans for it to continue on despite the local unrest.

"To date, neither FIFA nor the LOC (local organizing committee) have ever discussed any such possibility," it read.

An 18-year-old was killed during the protests after a collision with a car in Sao Paolo on Thursday, while others were injured. Another reason for many of the protests have been because of the money spent of stadiums for the upcoming 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

It has been reported that $13.3 billion will be spent on improving stadiums, airports and other projects, with approximately $3.5 billion being spent on venues. One banner outside the Maracana Stadium, ahead of Spain's match with Tahiti, read: 'We want hospitals and schools in FIFA standards.'

Meanwhile, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has told protesters not to "use football to make their demands heard."

The tournament began on June 15, and will run until June 30. The demonstrations have been a blow to Brazil, which saw this competition as a test run for next summer's World Cup.
