Feldman's rotation spot in jeopardy after another poor start

It's barely been two weeks since Neftali Feliz went on the disabled list with a sprained elbow ligament, and already the Texas Rangers are facing another pitching crisis.

Scott Feldman lasted only 1 2/3 innings in a 12-1 loss to Oakland on Monday. Feldman allowed eight innings in the second, the most runs the A's have scored in an inning this year.

This has not been an isolated issue for Feldman. He's now made five starts for the Rangers this season and has failed to last five innings in any of them. It's the fifth time in Rangers history a pitcher has made at least five consecutive starts of less than five innings. John Burkett did it in 1999 on the way to losing his spot in the rotation; David Clyde did it in 1973 and again in 1974, and Lloyd Allen did it in 1973.

Feldman is scheduled to pitch again Saturday in San Francisco -- if the Rangers don't make a move before then.

Immediately after the game, manager Ron Washington said the club had not considered any options yet for potential changes. Part of that is because the options are limited while the Rangers wait for Roy Oswalt to get himself in shape at Class AAA Round Rock. Oswalt has made just one start at Round Rock and thrown 36 pitches. He is scheduled to start again Thursday. He probably needs at least two more starts to be a legitimate option.

The other options:

--Left-hander Robbie Ross, who was a starter in the minors, would be extremely limited. Ross has not thrown more than 40 pitches this season, and he threw only 34 on Monday. The Rangers could have tried to stretch him out Monday but opted not to. Plus, if Ross goes into the rotation for a couple of starts, the Rangers lose their one lefty in the bullpen.

--None of the advanced prospects at Class AAA has really shined this season. Left-hander Martin Perez seems to be getting back on track after a very rough stretch. He started Monday, allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings to lower his ERA to 5.28. Last week, the Rangers sent pitching coordinator Danny Clark to visit the Round Rock club to talk with Perez, who has walked 31 in 61 1/3 innings.
