Real Salt Lake extended its lead in the Supporters Shield race and the quest for top seed in the West with a 3-0 win over FC Dallas in Frisco.
Javier Morales put the Royals up 1-0 late in the first half. One-on-one with Zach Loyd, Morales slid a ball between the legs of the defender and inside Raul Fernandez's post.
RSL hit a setback shortly after, when an awkward landing forced goalkeeper Josh Saunders, deputizing while Nick Rimando is on international duty at the Gold Cup, out of the game. 24-year-old Jeff Attinella, in his first season in Major League Soccer, made his MLS debut, coming on at halftime.
Despite the loss of Saunders, RSL continued undisrturbed, and grabbed a second in the 79th minute. Abdoulie Mansally played a cross in from the left to Ned Grabavoy at the top of the box, who let the ball drop before half-volleying into the net.
Olmes Garcia sealed the win late. Joao Plata whiffed on Luis Gil's dangerous cutback cross, but Garcia was behind him unmarked, and he didn't fail, sending his shot into the back of the net.
The win gives Real Salt Lake a six-point cushion over FC Dallas, which will end up dropping to at least third place this weekend, no matter what the results, and could find itself as low as fifth. The home loss is Dallas' first in 2013.
