If you have ever wondered what some of our favorite movie celebrities would have done if they had not been actors, I have the answer-golf, case in point, Dennis Quaid. Rated as one of the best celebrity golfers, Quaid carries a plus one handicap and is said to be an intense competitor.
Dennis, a Houston native, did not care for the game while he was growing up. It was not until the mid-eighties that he began playing. A former cocaine user, Quaid started hitting the ball as therapy to help him overcome his habit. The sport of golfing soon had him hooked as hard as the drug he was fighting, but no one is complaining.
Kurt Russell started playing golf as a teenager. Sometime in his 20's he put down the clubs and did not pick them up again for 25years. He says he started missing the game, as he got older, and found his way back to the golf course. He describes himself as a spurt player and will go a couple months between periods of play.
Apparently, he likes the game quite a bit since him and his long time mate, Goldie Hawn, own a home at the exclusive Bighorn Golf Club near Palm Desert, California. Russell claims he held a three or handicap when he was young but has come back in recent years with a plus nine.
Hard case, drug using, alcohol consuming metal rockers are not immune from the game either. Alice cooper, once the definition of demon incarnate, claims the sport of golf was his way out of a lifetime of addiction. Over the years, the famous musician has become a good golfer, and sports a six handicap. The game influenced him so much he has written a book "Alice Cooper, Golf Monster: A Rock 'N' Roller's Twelve Steps to Becoming a Golf Addict".
Cooper has been clean and sober since 1983. Since then he has played golf with some of the biggest names in the sport, including Tiger Woods. In the words of the Rock Legend himself, "Alice Cooper hates golf" but Vincent Furnier, the man behind the makeup admits he is addicted to the game.
Golf is the major summer time sport here in Northeast Harbor. I've played each year here for the past decade. When I lived in Georgia, I had the opportunity to be a spectator at two of the Augusta championships.
