Each year there are many surprises in fantasy football. Players who were ignored in drafts or were selected in lower rounds often become fantasy starters within a few weeks of the season. Already in 2012 we have seen a few surprising players who have replaced players drafted ahead of them in many fantasy lineups.
Below are the top quarterbacks who are playing better than their projected values based on Yahoo's 2012 fantasy projections.
Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins
Griffin was projected just outside of the top 10 quarterbacks in Yahoo's preseason rankings. It was a fair projection for a rookie, as few could have predicted that Griffin would be this successful this quickly. In four games Griffin has scored eight touchdowns, four passing and four rushing. He has passed for 1,070 yards and rushed for another 234. Furthermore, while rookies are often plagued by turnovers early, Griffin has thrown just one interception and has lost one fumble. He is currently a top three fantasy quarterback and should be active in most formats.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills
Fitzpatrick had a great start to the 2011 fantasy season, before falling off and entering this year projected outside of the top 20 quarterbacks. So far, however, he is in or near the top five quarterbacks in most formats, leading the league with 12 passing touchdowns. He does also have seven interceptions and only 931 yards, but if he can sustain his performance this season, he will finish way ahead of expectations. Owners needing quarterbacks should note that Fitzpatrick is still available in 45% of Yahoo leagues.
Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens
Flacco was ranked just inside the top 20 in Yahoo's season projections, yet he too is near the top five quarterbacks in most leagues. On the field, he has looked like a much better player this season, and this has shown in his fantasy numbers. Flacco has thrown seven touchdowns and only three interceptions, while also rushing for another score. His 1,269 passing yards are third in the league. Flacco is still available in 14% of leagues.
