In Week 5 of the 2012 fantasy football season, some players have more favorable matchups than others. When scourging the waiver wire for players to use in Week 5, consider these free agents who are likely available in leagues for starting in the second week of the season. Here's a look at some players at each position who are likely available in your fantasy league and have favorable statistical matchups in Week 5*.
QB Christian Ponder, Minnesota Vikings (26% owned)
Matchup: vs. Tennessee Titans, 2nd most fantasy points to quarterbacks
Despite coming off his worst game of the season where he only had 111 passing yards and zero touchdowns against the Detroit Lions in Week 4, Ponder heads into another great matchup against the Titans. Struggling on all aspects of defense, Tennessee may be Ponder's easiest opponent to date. While the Vikings may opt to primarily attack the Titans on the ground with Adrian Peterson, Ponder could also be in line for a solid game at home in Week 5. The top two performances by quarterbacks against the Titans this season were Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers in Week 2 (23.26 points) and Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions in Week 3 (15.88 points).
RB Jackie Battle, San Diego Chargers (55% owned)
Matchup: at New Orleans Saints, most fantasy points to running backs
Battle continued to be the Chargers featured running back in Week 4 and could earn his second straight start in Week 5 against the Saints. Allowing a league-worst 186.8 rushing yards per game, this is a great opportunity for Battle as he looks to receive a nice number of carries against a poor run defense. The top two performances by running backs against the Saints this season were Jamaal Charles of the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3 (34.8 points) and Alfred Morris of the Washington Redskins in Week 1 (21.6 points).
WR Harry Douglas, Atlanta Falcons (0% owned)
Matchup: at Washington Redskins, most fantasy points to wide receivers
With just nine catches for 78 yards this season, Douglas has not been a fantasy starter at all this year. However, when considering Julio Jones' hand injury and the Falcons opposition for Week 5, Douglas could sneak into a larger role against the Redskins. Certainly not a play for normal-sized leagues, Douglas could be worth a look as a surprise contributor in very deep leagues. The top two performances by wide receivers against the Redskins this season were A.J. Green of the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 (25.4 points) and Danny Amendola of the St. Louis Rams in Week 2 (20 points).
TE Scott Chandler, Buffalo Bills (43% owned)
Matchup: at San Francisco 49ers, 5th most fantasy points to tight ends
While the 49ers defense has been very good this year, the one position they have been a little susceptible in is tight end. They have given up touchdowns to opposing tight ends in three of the last four starts, which is a good sign for Chandler, the Bills' primary red zone target this season. The top two performances by tight ends against the 49ers this season were Kyle Rudolph of the Vikings in Week 3 (15.6 points) and Jermichael Finley of the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 (10.7 points).
K Steven Hauschka, Seattle Seahawks (5% owned)
Matchup: at Carolina Panthers, 2nd most fantasy points to kickers
With the Seahawks offense still struggling for the most part this season, Hauschka has gotten his fair share of field goal opportunities in Seattle. Up against a Panthers team who has given up plenty of field goals this season, he could be a surprisingly-solid play in Week 5. The top two performances by kickers against the Panthers this season were Lawrence Tynes of the New York Giants in Week 3 (20 points) and Matt Bryant of the Falcons in Week 4 (14 points).
Minnesota Vikings team defense (46% owned)
Matchup: vs. Tennessee Titans, 14th most fantasy points to team defenses
From a Titans quarterback switch due to injury from Jake Locker to Matt Hasselbeck to a lack of a consistent offensive game, Tennessee provides the Vikings with a very favorable matchup. With concerns at every position, the Vikings could rack up plenty of sacks, fumbles, and turnovers in this good opportunity. The top performances by team defenses against the Titans this season were the Houston Texans team defense in Week 4 (23 points) and the New England Patriots team defense in Week 1 (16 points).
