In Week 4 of the 2012 fantasy football season, some players have more favorable matchups than others. When scourging the waiver wire for players to use in Week 4, consider these free agents who are likely available in leagues for starting in the second week of the season. Here's a look at some players at each position who are likely available in your fantasy league and have favorable statistical matchups in Week 4*.
QB Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (46% owned)
Matchup: vs. Washington Redskins, 3rd most fantasy points to quarterbacks
Freeman has yet to look great in any of his starts this season but could turn things around against the Redskins in Week 4. Despite throwing for no more than 243 passing yards in any start, he'll face a Redskins team that has allowed nine passing touchdowns and at least 300 yards in each game through the air. Despite the rough start, Freeman could rebound from a bad performance and face a Washington secondary with many problems. The top two performances by quarterbacks against the Redskins this season were Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 (25.72 points) and Sam Bradford of the St. Louis Rams in Week 2 (24.40 points).
RB Jacquizz Rodgers, Atlanta Falcons (50% owned)
Matchup: vs. Carolina Panthers, 5th most fantasy points to running backs
Even with Michael Turner apparently solidifying his spot as the feature back, Rodgers has found a nice niche on the Falcons. Aside from a disappointing outing against the Denver Broncos in Week 2, he has started to get a bigger role on the team. Facing a Panthers defense that has struggle against the run, Rodgers could get a nice number of touches and is always a threat to break off a big play. With no "home run" plays yet, Week 4 could be the week he explodes with a great fantasy performance. The top two performances by running backs against the Panthers this season were Andre Brown of the New York Giants in Week 3 (25 points) and Pierre Thomas of the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 (14.3 points).
WR Leonard Hankerson, Washington Redskins (10% owned)
Matchup: at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, most fantasy points to wide receivers
With Pierre Garcon questionable against the Buccaneers, Robert Griffin III may rely heavily on Hankerson. While most of the Buccaneers' struggles came from allowing a big game to the Giants, Hankerson still has value as a solid flex play that could be the top target for Washington in Week 4. The top two performances by wide receivers against the Buccaneers this season were Hakeem Nicks (25.9 points) and Victor Cruz (23.9 points) of the Giants in Week 2.
TE Kyle Rudolph, Minnesota Vikings (60% owned)
Matchup: at Detroit Lions, 5th most fantasy points to tight ends
A star so far this season, Rudolph faces a Lions defense that has been dominated by opposing tight ends. Possessing great chemistry with Christian Ponder in the end zone, he'll be a big target once again and has a great chance at scoring a touchdown for the third consecutive game. The top two performances by tight ends against the Lions this season were Vernon Davis of the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2 (19.3 points) and Jared Cook of the Tennessee Titans in Week 3 (13.7 points).
K Lawrence Tynes, New York Giants (33% owned)
Matchup: at Philadelphia Eagles, 3rd most fantasy points to kickers
Tynes was a top kicker in Week 3 with a career-high five made field goals against the Panthers. Up against an Eagles team that has been friendly to opposing kickers, Tynes' consistency makes him a great option in Week 4. The top two performances by kickers against the Eagles this season were Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2 (16 points) and Phil Dawson of the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 (12 points).
San Diego Chargers team defense (8% owned)
Matchup: at Kansas City Chiefs, 2nd most fantasy points to team defenses
Inconsistent so far this season, the Chargers have been good against the run so far this season, which is the one thing Kansas City is good at with Jamaal Charles in the backfield. Kansas City has been a good matchup this year against opposing defenses, so the Chargers could forces a lot of sacks and turnovers in this good opportunity. The top performances by team defenses against the Chiefs this season was the Buffalo Bills team defense in Week 2 (18 points).
