In Week 2 of the 2012 fantasy football season, some players have more favorable matchups than others. When scourging the waiver wire for players to use in Week 2, consider these free agents who are likely available in leagues for starting in the second week of the season. Here's a look at some players at each position who are likely available in your fantasy league and have favorable statistical matchups in Week 2*.
QB Christian Ponder, Minnesota Vikings (11% owned)
Matchup: at Indianapolis Colts, 9th most fantasy points to quarterbacks
With effective play by Percy Harvin, Adrian Peterson, and Blair Walsh, Ponder had his first career win at home in a close overtime victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Starting to come into his own in his first full year as starter, he'll face a Colts defense that is still adjusting to a new 3-4 defense. In Week 1, Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears scored 19.92 points with 333 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, one interception, and minus-four rushing yards.
RB Jonathan Dwyer, Pittsburgh Steelers (28% owned)
Matchup: vs. New York Jets, 5th most fantasy points to running backs
After serving as the Steelers' best running back in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, Dwyer is expected to receive more playing time in Week 2 against a Jets team that allowed the most fantasy points to C.J. Spiller in Week 1. Outplaying Isaac Redman and not having to compete yet with the injured Rashard Mendenhall, Dwyer could have a nice output in Week 2. In Week 1, Spiller of the Buffalo Bills scored 23.4 points with 169 rushing yards, 25 receiving yards, 1 touchdown, 1 fumble lost.
WR Mike Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (62% owned)
Matchup: at New York Giants, most fantasy points to wide receivers
In Week 1, Williams saved an otherwise disappointing showing against the Carolina Panthers with Tampa Bay's only touchdown of the game. Facing a New York Giants pass defense that struggled against Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, and Kevin Ogletree, the Buccaneers' No. 2 receiver could receive plenty of one-on-one matchups with Vincent Jackson taking away pressure and do well against a battered Giants secondary. In Week 1, Ogletree of the Dallas Cowboys scored 23.4 points with 114 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns.
TE Coby Fleener, Indianapolis Colts (52% owned)
Matchup: vs. Minnesota Vikings, 8th most fantasy points to tight ends
Targeted 10 times in his debut, Fleener had great chemistry with Stanford teammate and Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. Facing a Vikings defense that gave up a touchdown to the tight end last week, Fleener will likely remain the second-most popular target for Luck, meaning he should be given plenty of opportunities to produce. In Week 1, Marcedes Lewis of the Jaguars scored 11.2 points with 52 receiving yards and 1 touchdown.
K Shayne Graham, Houston Texans (8% owned)
Matchup: at Jacksonville Jaguars, 3rd most fantasy points to kickers
Despite missing a 52-yard field goal in Week 1, Graham had a solid debut with the Texans by scoring 12 points to open the season. Looking sharp since beating out Randy Bullock for the starting job, his role on a very good Texans offense could make him a strong fantasy kicker like Neil Rackers in past years. In Week 1, Walsh of the Vikings scored 17 points by going 4-for-4 in field goal attempts and making two extra points.
Kansas City Chiefs team defense (7% owned)
Matchup: at Buffalo Bills, most fantasy points to team defenses
This week, the Chiefs are facing a Bills offense that scored 28 points against the New York Jets, mostly in garbage time, but also gave up four turnovers and allowed two touchdowns on defense and special teams. Without Fred Jackson and David Nelson who are both out with injuries, this could be a good matchup for a Chiefs team looking to make up for their embarrassing Week 1 outing against the Atlanta Falcons. In Week 1, the Jets team defense scored 19 points (28 points allowed, three interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, 1 defensive touchdown, 1 return touchdown).
