To stay ahead of other teams in your fantasy baseball leagues, it is important to scour the waiver wire and free agent pool to pick up pitchers that will help your team succeed in the present and future. Here's a look at five pitchers owned in less than 50% of Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Baseball leagues* who are worth adding for Week 6.
SP Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (40% owned*)
Statistics*: 36.2 IP, 4 W, 0 SV, 36 K, 2.21 ERA, 1.12 WHIP
An irrelevant fantasy option over the last six years, Capuano may have finally found a home with the NL West-leading Dodgers. With four wins and nearly a strikeout per inning, Capuano has kept his ERA at a clean 2.21 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. Constantly improving as the season goes on and with a start in Week 6 against the Colorado Rockies, acquire Capuano now if he's still available.
SP Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (40% owned)
Statistics: 30.0 IP, 2 W, 0 SV, 18 K, 0.90 ERA, 0.87 WHIP
While Jake Peavy has looked like an ace for the White Sox and Philip Humber earned instant credibility with his perfect game, Floyd has been one of the most productive starters in the American League. Over his past three starts, Floyd has allowed only four runs and has thrown 21 strikeouts in 21 innings. With a home start on Friday, May 11 against the Kansas City Royals, Floyd is worth keeping active for his strikeouts and WHIP.
RP Steve Cishek, Miami Marlins (19% owned)
Statistics: 14.1 IP, 4 W, 0 SV, 15 K, 0.63 ERA, 0.91 WHIP
With Heath Bell no longer holding onto the closer role according to manager Ozzie Guillen, Cishek is the most likely first option for the Marlins. With four wins, 15 strikeouts, and an ERA under one, Cisek could easily perform well in this spot. While this move is likely temporary, Cishek could be a source for a couple of saves in Week 6.
SP Jake Arrieta, Baltimore Orioles (16% owned)
Statistics: 38.1 IP, 2 W, 0 SV, 33 K, 3.52 ERA, 0.99 WHIP
Despite pitching in the difficult AL East, Arrieta has performed very well as the Orioles' ace. In his last outing on the road against the New York Yankees, Arrieta had perhaps his best start of his career with eight shutout innings and nine strikeouts. With two starts in Week 6 against the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays, Arrieta is worth implementing given his great numbers all season.
RP Andrew Cashner, San Diego Padres (13% owned)
Statistics: 13.0 IP, 2 W, 0 SV, 11 K, 2.08 ERA, 1.38 WHIP
Like Cishek, Cashner will get some opportunities as a closer thanks to Huston Street going on the DL. While his numbers aren't as sparkling as Cishek's (11:10 K:BB ratio and 1.38 WHIP), Street is expected to be out for more than 15 days, making Cashner a better long-term option than Cishek.
Other Week 6 waiver wire adds of interest: Pittsburgh Pirates SP Erik Bedard (44%), Chicago Cubs SP/RP Jeff Samardzija (29%), Oakland Athletics SP Jarrod Parker (21%), Toronto Blue Jays SP Henderson Alvarez (14%), Cleveland Indians SP Derek Lowe (13%)
