Fantasy Baseball 2012 – Week 23 Most-Added Pitchers: Fan’s Review

Yahoo Contributor Network

While trades are a great way to acquire the best pitchers for your fantasy baseball team, the waiver wire and free agent pool are also a great source for finding key contributors and pitchers that will help your team win on a weekly basis. From pitchers currently on a hot streak to players expected to breakout or produce in a new situation, here are the most-added pitchers from Week 23 of the 2012 fantasy baseball season.

Monday, September 10: SP Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels, 5,918 adds*

In an upward trend over his last eight starts, Santana has been pitching quite well for the Angels, including his third 10-strikeout performance of the year against the Detroit Tigers. Facing the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday, he looked like a good spot-starter in Week 23 for his streak of solid outings over the past month. Despite earning the loss, Santana did not disappoint with only one earned run and six strikeouts against the A's.

Other top adds of the day: Milwaukee Brewers SP/RP Marco Estrada (5,272 adds), Philadelphia Phillies SP/RP Kyle Kendrick (4,982 adds), Minnesota Twins SP Scott Diamond (4,504 adds)

Tuesday, September 11: SP A.J. Griffin, Oakland Athletics, 9,837 adds

A revelation in baseball since his major league debut in late June, Griffin is an undefeated and unstoppable pitcher. Facing off against Santana in this Week 23 start, Griffin got the better of the Angels with eight shutout innings and six more strikeouts to his unbelievable season.

Other top adds of the day: Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (6,514 adds), Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood (5,804 adds), Ervin Santana (4,154 adds)

Wednesday, September 12: SP/RP Lance Lynn, St. Louis Cardinals, 7,878 adds

Set to make a spot start for an injured Jake Westbrook on Thursday, owners picked up Lynn in hopes that he could be the strong starter from the first half of the season. In his first win since July 27, Lynn did well in his return to the rotation and could be a good add for the rest of the season if he stays in the rotation.

Other top adds of the day: Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland (7,441 adds), Philadelphia Phillies SP/RP Tyler Cloyd (6,272 adds), New York Yankees SP Phil Hughes (4,699 adds)

Thursday, September 13: SP Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds, 8,321 adds

After back-to-back successful starts against the Houston Astros, Arroyo had yet another great matchup against the Miami Marlins in Week 23. Despite winning his last five decisions, Arroyo was unreliable against the Marlins, allowing all four of their runs and earning the loss despite having his most strikeouts in a start since July 21. While he's coming off one bad start, Arroyo has been reliable this year and is worth an add for a Week 24 spot start.

Other top adds of the day: San Diego Padres SP/RP Andrew Cashner (7,729 adds), Milwaukee Brewers SP/RP Mike Fiers (6,051 adds), A.J. Griffin (5,013 adds)

Friday, September 14: SP/RP Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies, 12,760 adds

The latest NL starting pitcher to go on a great streak of quality starts, Kendrick had allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last six starts with an effective start against the Marlins. Facing the Astros on Saturday, owners picked up the valuable starter. Unfortunately, Kendrick had his worst start in a month with four allowed runs and big hits to Justin Maxwell, Jose Altuve, and Brett Wallace.

Other top adds of the day: Oakland Athletics SP Jarrod Parker (5,762 adds), Baltimore Orioles SP Zach Britton (5,400 adds), Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (4,395 adds)

Saturday, September 15: SP Andrew Werner, San Diego Padres, 23,191 adds

The latest revelation out of the Padres rotation, Werner had a string of four successful starts with two wins and a 2.59 ERA. Up against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, the hot pitcher was added by a large number of owners, particularly at this stage of the season. After earlier success, Werner ran into the Rockies' hot bats and had his worst start yet with five allowed earned runs in a high-scoring game that ended as a 12-11 win for San Diego.

Other top adds of the day: Oakland Athletics SP Daniel Straily (12,815 adds), Miami Marlins SP Ricky Nolasco (11,699 adds), Atlanta Braves Sp Mike Minor (9,768 adds)

Sunday, September 16: SP Chris Tillman, Baltimore Orioles, 17,293 adds

Schedule to make his first start on Monday since September 2, Tillman has been dealing with an inflamed nerve in his right elbow. Since rejoining the majors, he has been a very good pitcher for the Orioles and is a very viable option in these last few weeks of the season.

Other top adds of the day: Travis Wood (11,019 adds), Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb (8,339 adds), A.J. Griffin (4,297 adds)
