Fantasy Baseball 2012 – Week 22 Top Performers, September 3-9: Fan’s Review

Yahoo Contributor Network

Week 22 of the fantasy baseball season is complete and there were many great individual performances this week that helped propel head-to-head league owners to wins. From the best in the game to some surprise fantasy contributors, here's a review of the top 10 fantasy baseball players from September 3-9*.

10*. C Russell Martin, New York Yankees

Week 22 statistics*: 9/21 H/AB, 6 R, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 1 SB, .429 AVG

A mediocre fantasy catcher all season long, Martin had his week of the season with a hit in every game against the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles. While he's sorely inconsistent, his starting role in a good Yankees lineup can always lead to a great week for Martin like this one.

9. RP Craig Kimbrel, Atlanta Braves

Week 22 statistics: 4.1 IP, 1 W, 3 SV, 10 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.92 WHIP

From his three saves to excellent 10 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings pitched, Kimbrel has been head-to-head all season long with Cincinnati Reds' Aroldis Chapman for the being the best reliever in the National League.

8. SP/RP Kris Medlen, Atlanta Braves

Week 22 statistics: 15.0 IP, 2 W, 0 SV, 15 K, 1.20 ERA, 0.73 WHIP

Medlen has been a godsend for the Braves. From starting in the bullpen to being absolutely unstoppable in the rotation, he has been perfect in his eight starts.

7. SP James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays

Week 22 statistics: 17.0 IP, 2 W, 0 SV, 13 K, 1.59 ERA, 0.59 WHIP

After throwing eight strong innings against the Yankees to start Week 22, Shields ended the week with a two-hitter against an even better Texas Rangers lineup. With eight quality starts in a row, he is one of the best fantasy starting pitchers right now.

6. OF Adam Jones, Baltimore Orioles

Week 22 statistics: 9/21 H/AB, 7 R, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB, .393 AVG

As the Orioles inch closer to a playoff spot, Jones has started to heat up again with his great overall play. After starting this season off well, he struggled in the past few months to maintain his great hitting but is still a great fantasy outfielder.

5. 1B/3B Mark Reynolds, Baltimore Orioles

Week 22 statistics: 7/24 H/AB, 6 R, 5 HR, 10 RBI, 0 SB, .292 AVG

Jones' teammate and one of the hottest batters in Week 22, Reynolds' run includes nine home runs and 17 RBIs in his last 10 games. Reynolds' hot streak has come at a great time for an Orioles team in a tight division race.

4. 3B Chase Headley, San Diego Padres

Week 22 statistics: 9/28 H/AB, 6 R, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 0 SB, .321 AVG

The ever-constant hitting threat in the Padres lineup, Headley continued his outpour of success with 13 RBIs this week. August's NL Player of the Month, he is showing no signs of slowing down for the Padres.

3. OF Jay Bruce, Cincinnati Reds

Week 22 statistics: 11/22 H/AB, 5 R, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 0 SB, .500 AVG

Demonstrating a high batting average this week compared to what he had put up a month ago, Bruce went deep four times and is slowly creeping his way into the MVP discussion as an unlikely candidate.

2. 1B Adam LaRoche, Washington Nationals

Week 22 statistics: 12/27 H/AB, 6 R, 5 HR, 8 RBI, 0 SB, .444 AVG

September has been a good month for LaRoche, for he already has six home runs, 11 RBIs, and a .424 batting average in nine games. A solid source of power and run production, he has had a career-year with the Nationals this season.

1. OF B.J. Upton, Tampa Bay Rays

Week 22 statistics: 8/20 H/AB, 7 R, 5 HR, 6 RBI, 3 SB, .400 AVG

A very interesting line where he has five home runs this week but only eight hits, Upton put an exclamation point on his great week with three solo shots on September 9 against the Rangers. After struggling in the first half of the season, he has found his power stroke, hitting 14 home runs in 53 second half games.

Honorable mentions (ranked 11-15 in order): Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman, Toronto Blue Jays OF Anthony Gose, Miami Marlins SP Ricky Nolasco, Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond, Chicago Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo
