To stay ahead of other teams in your fantasy baseball leagues, it is important to scour the waiver wire and free agent pool to pick up pitchers that will help your team succeed in the present and future. Here's a look at five pitchers owned in less than 50% of Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Baseball leagues* who are worth adding for Week 18.
Statistics*: 127.1 IP, 9 W, 0 SV, 89 K, 3.75 ERA, 1.23 WHIP
Prior to his trade to the Braves, Maholm was on an excellent roll with the Chicago Cubs, going 5-0 with a 1.02 ERA in his last six starts. While unsuccessful in winning his first start with the Braves, he did record a season-high eight strikeouts against the Houston Astros and looks to be a reliable option throughout the second half of the season. Pick up this steady starter for quality starts in August and September.
SP Scott Diamond, Minnesota Twins (43% owned)
Statistics: 107.1 IP, 9 W, 0 SV, 59 K, 2.93 ERA, 1.17 WHIP
Despite leaving his last start against the Chicago White Sox after being struck in the thigh by a line drive, Diamond is ok to make his next scheduled start against the Cleveland Indians. A two-start option in Week 18, he has two solid matchups against Cleveland and the Tampa Bay Rays and has been decent in four post-All Star break starts (2-2, 3.81 ERA).
RP Greg Holland, Kansas City Royals (38% owned)
Statistics: 41.2 IP, 4 W, 1 SV, 57 K, 3.46 ERA, 1.49 WHIP
With Jonathan Broxton in Cincinnati, Holland has assumed the closer role in Kansas City. Above average in the first half of the season, he has been given an opportunity to take hold of the position and has averaged more than a strikeout-per-inning. Holland is likely one of the last closer options, if any, available on the waiver wire.
SP Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves (37% owned)
Statistics: 116.2 IP, 6 W, 0 SV, 99 K, 5.01 ERA, 1.29 WHIP
While Maholm is the new starting pitcher in town, the Braves were getting plenty of solid outings out of Minor in July. In his four July starts, he had a 1.98 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts in 27.1 innings, greatly improving from his numbers in earlier months. With his control issues more under control, he could be a good strikeout pitcher for the rest of the season.
SP Bartolo Colon, Oakland Athletics (19% owned)
Statistics: 131.2 IP, 8 W, 0 SV, 81 K, 3.55 ERA, 1.25 WHIP
After hitting a hiccup in the middle of July against two strong offenses in the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, Colon has been solid in his last two shutout outings against the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. With an excellent strikeout-to-walk ratio and a tendency to throw for strikes, he is a little-owned starter who could provide big dividends.
Other Week 18 waiver wire adds of interest: Chicago White Sox SP/RP Francisco Liriano (47%), Philadelphia Phillies SP Vance Worley (47%), Baltimore Orioles SP Wei-Yin Chen (38%), Miami Marlins RP Steve Cishek (35%), Kansas City Royals RP Aaron Crow (10%)
