Week 17 of the fantasy baseball season is complete and there were many great individual performances this week that helped propel head-to-head league owners to wins. From the best in the game to some surprise fantasy contributors, here's a review of the top 10 fantasy baseball players from July 30 to August 5*.
Week 17 statistics*: 12/24 H/AB, 4 R, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 0 SB, .500 AVG
One of the hottest hitters in the National League, Posey has batted .456 since the All-Star break and has also been efficient at knocking the ball out of the park. Posey is easily the best fantasy catcher in the game.
9. OF Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals
Week 17 statistics: 10/25 H/AB, 6 R, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 0 SB, .400 AVG
Holliday has been very consistent for the Cardinals, as he has now reached base by either walk or a hit in 16 straight games. Absolutely killing the ball in all categories but stolen bases, he is one of the top outfielders in the game.
8. SP James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays
Week 17 statistics: 9.0 IP, 1 W, 0 SV, 11 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.33 WHIP
While his ERA hasn't been great over the past month, Shields helped his case with a complete game three-hitter over the Oakland Athletics. Despite allowing eight runs in his last three starts, he has also averaged 10.3 strikeouts a game in this span, raising his season total to 145.
7. OF Drew Stubbs, Cincinnati Reds
Week 17 statistics: 8/23 H/AB, 10 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 3 SB, .348 AVG
A dual home run and stolen base threat at the top of the Reds lineup, Stubbs' production makes up for his less-than-stellar batting average.
6. RP Aroldis Chapman, Cincinnati Reds
Week 17 statistics: 4.0 IP, 0 W, 4 SV, 6 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.50 WHIP
Stubbs' teammate was absolutely electric for the Reds with four clean ninth innings and now 100 strikeouts, an astonishing number for a reliever, on the season. He has recorded a save in 13 straight appearances and has not allowed a run since June 24.
5. C A.J. Pierzynski, Chicago White Sox
Week 17 statistics: 6/18 H/AB, 6 R, 5 HR, 11 RBI, 0 SB, .333 AVG
Despite not starting on August 5, Pierzynski extended his unbelievable streak to five straight games with a homer. With very good power numbers on this season and reliable contact on the ball, he is on pace for a career year.
4. 1B Adam LaRoche, Washington Nationals
Week 17 statistics: 11/23 H/AB, 6 R, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 0 SB, .478 AVG
LaRoche has been on an absolute tear after the All-Star break by batting .348 with eight home runs and 18 RBIs. Historically a better second half hitter, there is a very good chance he keeps up good numbers not too different from this week's for the rest of the season.
3. OF Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels
Week 17 statistics: 9/30 H/AB, 11 R, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 2 SB, .300 AVG
Easily the best fantasy player of 2012, Trout continued his success by racking up a couple more home runs in Week 17 to give him 19 homers, 58 RBIs, 86 runs scored, and 33 stolen bases on the season.
2. SP A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates
Week 17 statistics: 17.2 IP, 2 W, 0 SV, 15 K, 1.02 ERA, 0.51 WHIP
Finding a home with the Pirates, Burnett continued his success in a two-start Week 17 by effectively dismantling the Chicago Cubs and Reds. After James McDonald served as the team's first half pitching MVP, Burnett is certainly looking like the best second half pitching MVP.
1. 1B Albert Pujols, Los Angeles Angels
Week 17 statistics: 14/33 H/AB, 9 R, 6 HR, 13 RBI, 1 SB, .424 AVG
Perhaps the best hitter in the majors since late May, Pujols added to his great numbers by having back-to-back multi-homer games against the Texas Rangers. In the Angels' three-game series against the Rangers, he went 7-for15 with four home runs, eight RBIs, and six runs scored.
Honorable mentions (ranked 11-15 in order): Boston Red Sox OF Carl Crawford, San Diego Padres 3B Chase Headley, Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt, Kansas City Royals OF Jarrod Dyson, San Francisco Giants OF Melky Cabrera
