To stay ahead of other teams in your fantasy baseball leagues, it is important to scour the waiver wire and free agent pool to pick up pitchers that will help your team succeed in the present and future. Here's a look at five pitchers owned in less than 50% of Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Baseball leagues* who are worth adding for Week 16.
Statistics*: 12.0 IP, 2 W, 0 SV, 11 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.92 WHIP
Off to a great start this season, Sheets pitched exceptionally well in his first two starts against the New York Mets and the Washington Nationals. Throwing six scoreless innings in each outing, he has capitalized on his opportunity with Atlanta and made a big splash in his return to the majors. Given his solid strikeout numbers as well, Sheets is a prime candidate for long-term success during the second half of the season.
SP/RP Felix Doubront, Boston Red Sox (39% owned)
Statistics: 102.0 IP, 10 W, 0 SV, 99 K, 4.24 ERA, 1.36 WHIP
Leading the Red Sox with 10 wins on the year, the talented Doubront has been solid for Boston despite a high number of walks, ERA, and WHIP. With excellent strikeout potential and two starts in Week 16, he has been excellent in July (2.70 ERA and 1.90 BAA) and has also been a better pitcher away from Fenway Park.
Statistics: 35.1 IP, 3 W, 2 SV, 26 K, 5.60 ERA, 1.75 WHIP
In the massive 10-player trade between the Astros and Toronto Blue Jays, several players including Cordero found themselves in the NL Central. Following the trade of Brett Myers to the Chicago White Sox, Cordero will now take over as Houston's closer and will see an increase in value thanks to his new role. While playing for Houston isn't the greatest fantasy scenario, Cordero is a veteran reliever with 329 career saves, which is second among active players behind Mariano Rivera, and will benefit from a move to the National League.
SP/RP Ross Detwiler, Washington Nationals (22% owned)
Statistics: 85.2 IP, 4 W, 0 SV, 59 K, 3.15 ERA, 1.23 WHIP
Since returning to the rotation, Detwiler has been solid, posting a 2.66 ERA in four starts. Despite working on a restricted pitch count, he has been effective in his outings and could be in line for more leeway on his restriction as the Nationals get closer to making the playoffs. After his three-week stint in the bullpen, perhaps Detwiler is now refreshed and ready for a strong second half.
RP Jared Burton, Minnesota Twins (14% owned)
Statistics: 38.1 IP, 1 W, 3 SV, 35 K, 2.35 ERA, 0.97 WHIP
With Matt Capps on the disabled list, Burton has split the closer role with Glen Perkins. With only two allowed earned runs in 22 appearances over the past two months, Burton has served as a reliable reliever for the Twins. Although his overall numbers aren't mind blowing, he is a readily-available reliever with save opportunities who does not hurt a fantasy pitching staff.
Other Week 16 waiver wire adds of interest: Texas Rangers SP Roy Oswalt (43%), Baltimore Orioles SP Wei-Yin Chen (30%), Cleveland Indians RP Vinnie Pestano (25%), Arizona Diamondbacks RP David Hernandez (12%), Kansas City Royals RP Greg Holland (11%)
