Fantasy Baseball 2012 – Week 15 Top Players, July 16-22: Fan’s Review

Yahoo Contributor Network

Week 15 of the fantasy baseball season is complete and there were many great individual performances this week that helped propel head-to-head league owners to wins. From the best in the game to some surprise fantasy contributors, here's a review of the top 10 fantasy baseball players from July 16 to July 22*.

10*. 3B Pedro Alvarez, Pittsburgh Pirates

Week 15 statistics*: 7/23 H/AB, 6 R, 4 HR, 7 RBI, 0 SB, .304 AVG

Alvarez did most of his damage this week in the Pirates' sweep of the Miami Marlins. In the three-game series, he went 4-for-11 with two home runs and knocked in three RBIs in the process.

9. 3B David Wright, New York Mets

Week 15 statistics: 10/25 H/AB, 4 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 1 SB, .400 AVG

Wright went to town in the beginning of the week in the three-game series against the Washington Nationals by going 7-for-13 with three home runs and six RBIs. With more power displayed in July as opposed to past months, he could be in line for an excellent second half.

8. 1B Albert Pujols, Los Angeles Angels

Week 15 statistics: 11/28 H/AB, 6 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 0 SB, .393 AVG

Pujols' best game of the week came on July 17 against the Detroit Tigers with three hits, three runs, one home run, and two RBIs. So far having his best month of the season, Pujols has built himself back up to a top fantasy first baseman.

7. OF Cody Ross, Boston Red Sox

Week 15 statistics: 9/25 H/AB, 6 R, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 0 SB, .360 AVG

The steady contributor in the Red Sox outfielder while Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury were out with injuries, Ross has been a consistent hitter this week. Even with the return of two prominent outfielders, Ross should maintain his value as a starter on the team.

6. RP Aroldis Chapman, Cincinnati Reds

Week 15 statistics: 3.1 IP, 0 W, 4 SV, 7 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.30 WHIP

With an unhittable fastball and plenty of strikeouts for a reliever, Chapman has easily joined the ranks of the elite closers in the game. Allowing just one walk in his outings in Week 15, few closers have more fantasy value than Chapman.

5. 1B/3B Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers

Week 15 statistics: 8/24 H/AB, 8 R, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB, .333 AVG

Aside from being the second Venezuela-born player to hit 300 home runs in his career, Cabrera also led the Tigers to a 6-1 record this week in wins over the Angels and Chicago White Sox. Hitting an incredible .385 since the All-Star break, Cabrera has certainly lived up to his elite fantasy status.

4. 1B/OF Adrian Gonzalez, Boston Red Sox

Week 15 statistics: 12/28 H/AB, 5 R, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 0 SB, .429 AVG

A must-start in all fantasy formats, Gonzalez has been a dominant hitter in July by hitting .406 in 16 games with 10 runs and 15 RBIs.

3. OF Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels

Week 15 statistics: 12/28 H/AB, 10 R, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB, .429 AVG

While Trout has had less stolen bases in Week 15, he extended his hitting streak to 11 games, which spans all the way back to the first game after the All-Star Game. In this streak, he has collected 20 hits, 13 runs, and seven RBIs.

2. OF Jason Kubel, Arizona Diamondbacks

Week 15 statistics: 9/22 H/AB, 8 R, 6 HR, 11 RBI, 0 SB, .409 AVG

Kubel proved his dominance in the league after hitting three home runs in the Diamondbacks win over the Houston Astros on July 21. As the seventh player in franchise history to homer three times in a game to putting up his first three-homer game of his career, he now leads the NL with 71 RBIs.

1. 3B Ryan Zimmerman, Washington Nationals

Week 15 statistics: 15/30 H/AB, 9 R, 5 HR, 8 RBI, 0 SB, .500 AVG

Zimmerman has surely made his comeback complete by hitting absolutely on fire this month. Going .414 with nine home runs, 19 RBIs, and 19 runs scored in July, he has been the best hitter in a very talented Nationals lineup.

Honorable mentions (ranked 11-15 in order): Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips, San Francisco Giants OF Melky Cabrera, Washington Nationals 2B/SS Danny Espinosa, Pittsburgh Pirates RP Joel Hanrahan, Seattle Mariners C Jesus Montero
