Fantasy Baseball 2012: Week 15 Pitchers, Waiver Wire Pickups, July 16-22

Yahoo Contributor Network

To stay ahead of other teams in your fantasy baseball leagues, it is important to scour the waiver wire and free agent pool to pick up pitchers that will help your team succeed in the present and future. Here's a look at five pitchers owned in less than 50% of Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Baseball leagues* who are worth adding for Week 15.

SP/RP Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins (43% owned*)

Statistics*: 91.1 IP, 3 W, 0 SV, 97 K, 4.93 ERA, 1.41 WHIP

Liriano's bounce back campaign hit its peak after striking out a career-high 15 batters against the Oakland Athletics on July 13. While he failed to get the win after allowing a grand slam to Jonny Gomes, Liriano has been excellent since returning from a May bullpen stint with a 2.82 ERA in his last nine starts. With an upcoming start against the Baltimore Orioles, another team with a lot of strikeout-prone hitters, Liriano's stock is the highest it's been all season.

RP Sergio Romo, San Francisco Giants (39% owned)

Statistics: 26.2 IP, 2 W, 5 SV, 32 K, 0.68 ERA, 0.75 WHIP

With Santiago Casilla suffering from a blister on his throwing hand, Romo could be seeing more save opportunities down the line. After the Giants' most-recent extra-innings win over the Houston Astros, Casilla has blown four of his last six appearances, adding some doubt to the team's ninth-inning situation. Exceptionally great against right-handers, Romo's great numbers could become even more useful if Casilla continues to falter.

SP Jason Vargas, Seattle Mariners (39% owned)

Statistics: 126.0 IP, 8 W, 0 SV, 86 K, 4.07 ERA, 1.15 WHIP

Coming off a complete game victory over the Athletics, Vargas has two starts in the second week of Week 15, including a Monday start against the Kansas City Royals. Averaging 7.3 strikeouts a game in his last three starts and solid for most of the season, Vargas looks to be a reliable option moving forward. With a potential move to a contending team possible, he would also benefit from a move to a better ballclub.

SP Wei-Yin Chen, Baltimore Orioles (29% owned)

Statistics: 109.0 IP, 7 W, 0 SV, 83 K, 3.80 ERA, 1.24 WHIP

Despite not yet earning a win in July, Chen has been solid in his outings. From two two-hit outings against the Mariners and Detroit Tigers to 19 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched, Chen has been pitching well but let down from poor bullpen performances. With his next start against a beatable Twins team, Chen could produce another solid outing and perhaps win his first outing since June 17.

RP Steve Cishek, Miami Marlins (18% owned)

Statistics: 39.0 IP, 4 W, 2 SV, 39 K, 2.08 ERA, 1.28 WHIP

With manager Ozzie Guillen returning to a closer-by-committee after the All-Star break, Cishek appears to be the first in line for save opportunities after the apparent demotion for Heath Bell. While former closer Juan Carlos Oviedo is expected to return from his suspension on July 23, Cishek's effectiveness this season makes him the best Marlins reliever to own for the time being.

Other Week 15 waiver wire adds of interest: Atlanta Braves SP Jair Jurrjens (32%), Los Angeles Dodgers SP Aaron Harang (19%), Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (18%), Cincinnati Reds SP Bronson Arroyo (11%), Toronto Blue Jays SP/RP Carlos Villanueva (10%)
