Fans Slam Alpha’s New Look In ‘Power Rangers’ Film
Lionsgate continues to reveal characters from the upcoming “Power Rangers” movie, and the latest character to be shown off is Alpha 5. However, many fans aren’t happy about his new look.
During the early 1990s series, Alpha, the Rangers’ robotic assistant, looked more like a vintage robot than his new look. Gone is Alpha’s original human-like look which has been replaced by a more alien-like appearance with extended arms and UFO shaped head.
Although we have yet to see Alpha in action, fans should expect him to retain his quirky personality thanks to “Saturday Night Live” alum Bill Hader providing his voice. But still, fans are not completely sold on the character's new look. Fans of “Power Rangers” took to Twitter to voice their thoughts about the new look, with one user writing, “If you ever wanted Alpha 5 to look like a mutant ant with a wasting disease, I have great news!”
Alpha 5 isn’t the only Power Rangers to get a drastic redesign. In April, the film’s main villain, Rita Repulsa, was revealed. Portrayed by Elizabeth Banks, the character’s colors have changed to green with her signature white hair being done away with. Goldar and the Putty Patrol will also be featured in the film but have yet to be revealed.
In an August interview with Den of Geek, singer and actress Becky G, who plays the Yellow Ranger in the film, said it’s important for the film to be real. “These characters are dealing with real issues that teenagers nowadays are dealing with,” she said. “One that [Naomi Scott, the Pink Ranger] talks about a lot is the cyberbullying. You’ll see some of that, and then each character has their own little thing that you’ll come across in the film.”
Dacre Montgomery, who plays the Red Ranger, told Den of Geek, “The themes that you see in this film are universal. The difference between the TV series in the 90s [and the reboot film] is that it is [set] now. We’re appealing to a contemporary audience.”
“Power Rangers” hits theaters on March 24, 2017.
