On June 20th, the Los Angeles Galaxy surprised critics, fans and especially Real Salt Lake with a stunning 3-2 victory. While the Galaxy showed a glimpse of 2011's champion team, one has to wonder if these recent wins are a preview of the future or just a fluke.
A Look Into the Past
This isn't the first time the Galaxy have won two games in a row in 2012. In April, the Galaxy beat the Portland Timbers 3-1 and then had a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids. At that point in the season, I thought the Galaxy might continue to win. Yet, I was wrong. Los Angeles then went on a seven-game winless streak. However, this time things were different. The Galaxy beat the top team in the West. In addition, this was the Galaxy's first ever win at Rio Tinto Stadium. I'd say that is a great accomplishment.
Yes, RSL had some defensive blunders. However, part of winning a game is about taking advantage of the other team's mistakes. There have been countless times where I've seen players miss when they are one-on-one with the keeper. However, Donovan beat Nick Rimando two times.
Both Starters and Reserves Performing
Donovan, Beckham and Mike Magee had strong performances against RSL. However, with Robbie Keane absent and seven players out with injuries, players like Bryan Jordan and Marcelo Sarvas had to step up. It seems like the Galaxy are finally starting to gel as a team. In addition, they have more confidence in each other.
Next Up, Vancouver Whitecaps
If the Galaxy are able to pull off a win against the Western Conference's third place team on June 23rd, then I might begin to think the Galaxy is "back." The Whitecaps are 2-2-2 on the road and have won two out of their last three games.
I don't think the Galaxy's recent victories were a fluke. However, only time will tell.
