Fan’s Preview: Will Ryan Vogelsong’s Start Earn Him a Spot in the Giants’ Postseason Rotation?

Yahoo Contributor Network

In the home finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Barry Zito pitched six innings of three-run ball for his 14th win of the season and the Giants' 10th straight win in a game he has started. With consistency and success in August and September, Zito is earning his way into the fourth postseason rotation spot behind Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, and Tim Lincecum. With all five Giant starters going on the postseason roster, someone will be relegated to the bullpen.

Based off recent performance, it could be Ryan Vogelsong, today's starter against the San Diego Padres, who's left out of the bunch. While his last start against the Padres on September 21 was encouraging (one run allowed on five hits in six innings pitched), he has a 10.31 ERA in his last seven starts. A good outing against the Padres could help him secure the final playoff rotation spot.

In today's game, the Padres will use Andrew Werner for his second straight start against the Giants. On September 22, he lasted only 3 2/3 innings, allowed five runs, and gave up big performances by Brandon Belt, Hunter Pence, and Marco Scutaro. Werner's losing performance was also the Giants' division-clinching win.
