Fan’s Preview: Will Giants Win Game 4 and Sweep Tigers in World Series?

Yahoo Contributor Network

Everything is going right for the San Francisco Giants. After another 2-0 shutout of the Detroit Tigers in Game 3 of the World Series, this time at Comerica Park in Detroit, the Giants are just one game away from sweeping them and winning their second title in three years. Needless to say, momentum is definitely on San Francisco's side.

While the Tigers' pitching performances have been good in these two straight games, Madison Bumgarner outpitched Doug Fister in Game 2 and Ryan Voglesong outpitched Anibal Sanchez in Game 3. The disparity of hits by the two teams in these games is not large (San Francisco's 12 hits to Detroit's seven), but the Giants have been able to string their hits together for runs. Meanwhile, the Tigers have fallen victim to double plays in the infield and great grabs in the outfield. While the Giants are in an excellent position, for no team down 3-0 in the World Series has ever come back to win four straight games, they're not getting ahead of themselves.

"If we start thinking about that kind of stuff, things can get weird," reliever Jeremy Affeldt said. "And we don't want them to get weird."

No stranger to postseason comebacks this season (just ask the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals), the Tigers could very well make this series interesting if Max Scherzer has another great outing in the playoffs and if their bats can heat up against Matt Cain, who will be going for his third series-clinching performance of the 2012. While the Giants have thoroughly outperformed the Tigers in these three World Series games, this 2012 postseason has proven to be nothing but ordinary. The momentum is definitely in San Francisco's favor, but Detroit is still playing at home and has a very talented, yet slumping lineup that could claim Game 4 and make this World Series head back to the West Coast.
