NLCS Game 1 featured poor outings by both team's starting pitchers. Both Madison Bumgarner and Lance Lynn lasted 3 2/3 innings and had little positive effect on the game. The two starters were charged with all of the allowed runs and it was their bullpens that shut down their opposition.
Game 2 will feature two starting pitchers who had decent starts in the NLDS. In Game 3 against the Cincinnati Reds, Ryan Vogelsong made his first postseason start and allowed just one run over five innings. In Game 3 against the Washington Nationals, Chris Carpenter, pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings and lowed his career postseason ERA to 2.88. In this game, the Giants will be looking for their first quality start of the postseason while the Cardinals hope Carpenter continues his success.
In Game 1, the two teams combined for 10 runs and 15 hits. If the two starters continue to have success this postseason, look for this game to be a low-scoring affair. If the game stays close until the late innings, Game 2 could also be decided by the efforts of the bullpen.
The San Francisco Giants will host the St. Louis Cardinals at AT&T Park located in San Francisco, CA on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. PT. This will be the second game of a best-out-of-seven game series.
