The Falcons know they will be starting John Abraham and Ray Edwards at defensive end, but they are still looking for another player to emerge at the position. The search for a pass-rush specialist to work into the DE rotation has been going on for years, and the club is starting to tire of waiting for Lawrence Sidbury to step up and fill that void. Sidbury, heading into his fourth season, had four sacks last season after recording only one sack in his first two seasons.
“With the flexibility that we are going to have in our defense, (Sidbury) is a guy that can do a number of things,” head coach Mike Smith said July 28. “That is something that is attractive to our defensive staff. Lawrence is in a situation where we drafted a defensive end so there is going to be some competition there.”
Atlanta took Jonathan Massaquoi of Troy in the fifth round of this year's draft with the hope that he would challenge Sidbury and Kroy Biermann.
