Falcons DT Peters needs Achilles surgery

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Corey Peters will require surgery to repair an Achilles injury, coach Mike Smith announced Tuesday.

Peters suffered the season-ending injury on Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers. Peters played 10 snaps and recorded a sack before being helped off the field.

Smith said Peters will undergo surgery and faces a six-to-eight month recovery process. It was a non-contact injury.

"This is going to be a tough offseason for Corey," Smith said. "He was injured two years ago with a foot injury and battled and went on PUP. The rehabilitation time for an Achilles injury is going to put us close to the beginning of next season, so he's going to have to get it going and start hitting it. But he is a tough guy and we all feel for Corey."

The Falcons will also placed safety Zeke Motta on injured reserve this week. Motta, who injured his neck in practice last week, underwent surgery on Sunday.

"The recovery time, from what I understand, is a good four to six weeks,'' Smith said. "And he should be good to go.''
