Ezekiel Elliot vs. Kam Chancellor was awesome

If you only read about the game on social media and didn’t watch, you might be tempted to think that Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot plowed right through Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor on Thursday night.

Cowboys fans who have been misspelling Chancellor’s name have been perpetuating the myth. A few national media members seem to have bought in as well. The breathless headline at Deadspin read “Ezekel Elliot kinda owned Kam Chancellor.” The truth of the matter is that the clash between Elliot and Chancellor was relatively even. It was fantastic television and probably the best part of the preseason so far: two behemoths at their respective positions meeting head on at full speed.

Elliot showed a lot of power and chutzpah but Chancellor responded in kind. Neither one of them backed down, much like charging rams meeting on a mountain-top. Observe.

It was no doubt an impressive debut from Dallas’ number four overall pick this year. Ezekiel Elliot appears to be the real deal. His size, strength, athleticism and skillset make him something like Adrian Peterson only with a receiving game and fewer fumbles. Clearly, Elliot is going to be a star in this league as long as he’s healthy and running behind that offensive line.

Chancellor also deserves credit for coming right back at Elliot, who weighs in at six feet even and 225 pounds. After the game Kam admitted to ESPN’s Sheil Kapadia that he was surprised by the rookie’s bravado.

“there was no film on him, so I didn’t know if he was going to juke or whatnot, so I was a little surprised, but not the second time… The second time, you know I’m bringing that wood. I was a little surprised the first time, but he’s got a lot of courage for that…”

Chancellor got some payback later on by laying a big hit on Ezekiel Elliot from behind, but he was flagged for a 15-yard penalty:

Kam later told Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times that he doesn’t believe he should have been flagged and intends to appeal if there’s a fine.

We can’t wait for round two but we’re going to have to wait a while.

The Seahawks and Cowboys won’t meet this year unless it’s in the playoffs. The good news is that Dallas is scheduled to host Seattle at some point during the 2017 regular season.
