Former TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin has been charged with assault.

Boykin was arrested Dec. 31 – two days before TCU’s Alamo Bowl matchup against Oregon – for allegedly assaulting a police officer following a fight at a San Antonio bar. Boykin was suspended for the game but has since caught on with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent.

According to multiple reports, the charge against Boykin – which was first reported by TMZ – is assault causing bodily harm, a misdemeanor. Video of the alleged incident shows a man believed to be Boykin scuffling with bar staff and officers. A police report says the arresting officer suffered lacerations to his knees. Police said the altercation started after Boykin was recognized and heckled at the establishment.

Boykin was initially hit with assaulting a public servant, resisting arrest and public intoxication charges. The quarterback’s agent, Drew Pittman, told the Seattle Times that Tuesday’s charge is part of a plea deal with authorities. As of now, Boykin has an arraignment set for Aug. 1 – two days before the Seahawks open training camp July 30. Pittman said Boykin won’t miss any practice time.

“Trevone has already agreed to terms with the authorities on a lesser charge,” Pittman said. “He has been accountable and remorseful from the beginning. Trevone is looking forward to training camp starting July 30th and to competing for a roster spot.”

In a statement to the Times, the Bexar County (Texas) District Attorney’s Office confirmed a plea deal is in the works.

“We are still discussing the terms of a possible plea agreement with Mr. Boykin and his attorney. Our Office does not release the details of any possible plea until it has been finalized and entered with the Court,” the statement said.

Boykin threw for 10,728 yards, 86 touchdowns and 37 interceptions while rushing for 2,049 yards and 27 scores during his TCU career. He went undrafted following his arrest, but caught on with the Seahawks and reportedly performed well during organized team activities and minicamp. With the status of Tarvaris Jackson in limbo following a recent arrest, Boykin could emerge as Seattle’s No. 2 quarterback.

With respect to the December incident, Boykin has said all the right things and expressed remorse.

“I’m trying to move forward and be positive about and learn from my mistakes,” Boykin said before the draft. “Now it’s about not making any more mistakes and moving past it and being positive, admit that I was wrong, take full responsibility for me being wrong and hopefully a team will give me a chance.”

Boykin was thankful Seattle gave him a chance.

“I’m doing better things and I’m excited for Coach (Pete) Carroll to call me and bless me with this opportunity,” Boykin said in May. “I’ve learned a lot through the process, and the main thing is just being positive and doing the right things. That’s what Coach Carroll preaches. If you’re going to be a Seahawk, you be a Seahawk 24/7, and that’s what I’m going to do.”
