Former NBA player Jerome Whitehead has died. He was 56.

Whitehead was found dead in his home Dec. 20 by his sister near El Cajon, Calif., a suburb of San Diego, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times Media Group, the sister of Whitehead, a native of Waukegan, Ill., a north suburb of Chicago, tried to reach him by phone but was unsuccessful. She then went to his home, finding him dead in a bathroom. He had apparently been dead for some time, as there were "signs of decomposition," a SDCME spokesman said.

An autopsy performed on Dec. 21 found that Whitehead had died from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage related to chronic alcohol abuse, according to the Sun-Times Media Group report.

The 6-foot-10 Whitehead starred collegiately at Marquette.

Whitehead played 11 seasons in the NBA for a number of teams including the San Diego Clippers, Utah Jazz, Dallas Mavericks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs. He scored 4,423 points, had 3,268 rebounds and 374 assists.

Whitehead's death comes less than three weeks after the death of former Marquette assistant and longtime college basketball head coach Rick Majerus.
